The process is very similar in principle to laser sintering ofplastic powders, except that the laser power and temperaturesused are very different, and that supports feature.
Applicability is a function of component size, volume andcomplexity. Both part size and volume have a dramatic effect onprice, whilst complexity is easily handled. Complexity has moreeffect on alternative technologies, especially where multipletechnologies are required to achieve it, giving DMLS anadvantage.
Alternative technologies to consider are CNC machining orinvestment casting.
